With a 4-year degree: 36 months of project management experience and 35 hours of PM education. With a high school diploma: 60 months of project management experience and 35 hours of PM education. Experience must be leading projects in the last 8 years.
The PMP exam contains 180 questions to be completed in 230 minutes. Questions include multiple choice, multiple select, matching, hotspot, and limited fill-in-the-blank. There are two 10-minute breaks. Approximately 50% of questions are agile or hybrid-focused.
The PMP is considered one of the harder professional certifications. The pass rate for first-time candidates is estimated at 60–70%. Most candidates study 3–6 months. The key challenge is the situational question format — you must choose the BEST answer among plausible options. Practice tests are essential preparation.
Yes. PMP certification is valid for 3 years. To renew, you must earn 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) within the 3-year cycle through education and giving back to the profession. Renewing is straightforward and does not require retaking the exam.
